Sideout Journal
About

We cover volleyball with the depth the sport deserves.

Founded in Bologna in 2019 by three former players and one very patient editor. Ad-free, reader-supported, published in English out of an office next to a very good espresso bar.

Sideout Journal exists because we got tired of reading recap posts. Volleyball is a beautiful and legitimately hard sport, and the writing about it — with a few honorable exceptions — has not caught up. Match reports are box scores in prose. Training pieces are recycled clinic notes. Pro coverage lives on Instagram, where a good rally is a fifteen-second reel and the next post is a supplement ad.

We thought the sport was owed better. So we made a magazine.

What we cover

Four beats:

How we work

We publish five to seven pieces per week, plus one long-form feature every Friday. Nothing is written by algorithm. Every piece is edited by a human who has coached, played, or watched enough volleyball to know when a claim is wrong.

We do not run advertising. Our revenue comes from paid subscribers (€6/month or €60/year) and from a small number of institutional partners — federations and clubs that pay for group access. If you are reading a piece that pushes a product, it is not sponsored and we are not being paid for it.
